How Can I Convince My Parents to Quit?

Raised hands

It’s not going to be easy, but it’s definitely worth the effort! Start by talking to your parents. Tell them about your concerns. If they are receptive to the idea of quitting, your most important role is to support them through their journey of reaching their goal of not smoking. Remember, quitting smoking isn’t easy! You have to be their motivator and realize it won’t be a walk in the park.

Check out the Children Helping And Motivating Parents to Stop Smoking (C.H.A.M.P.S.S.) Web site, which is full of tips for you about how to talk to your parents about quitting, and what you can do to support them through the quitting process.

There are many resources out there that you can provide your parents with to help them:

Maryland has a Quitline- 1-800-QUIT NOW (-1-800-784-8669) - which provides telephone-based counseling to Maryland Residents who are 18 years of age and older and who are interested in quitting smoking.  Visit www.smokingstopshere.com for more information.

Local Health Departments also have many resources, such as cessation classes, to offer to those looking to quit smoking.  Visit www.smokingstopshere.com to find contact information for your local health department.

Also visit the American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and find additional resources at the National Cancer Institute.

Remember, it’s hard to convince anyone who isn’t ready to quit smoking. Your best bet is to offer your support, no matter what, and make sure you’re there for them when your parents are ready.
