    Youth Advisory Board meeting

  • November 3, 2003 | Turner Memorial A.M.E. Church Health Fair

    Turner Memorial A.M.E. Church will host their annual health fair,"Healthy Living, Healthy Lifestyles for Youth and Teenager." The upcoming event will feature The Komen National Race for The Cure and The George Washington University Mammogram Van; Children's and Washington Hospital Center; P.G. Co. Dept. of Health; and other health professionals.

    The American Lung Association of Maryland and Prince George's Co. TRASH will have a table with games and information. TRASH will present "Toxic Soup," the ingredients in cigarettes.

  • October 29, 2003 | Red Ribbon Week

    TRASH coalition, Oxon Hill Smoke Free Teens will be increasing student's awareness about the dangers of drugs during Red Ribbon Week, 10/27-31. Wednesday is devoted to nicotine, the drug in tobacco products. The students will post banners, hand out information, and have smoke free pledges available for people to sign.

    Maryland DHMH (Department of Health and Mental Hygiene organize fun tobacco education activities such as Tic Tac Tar, Toxic Soup, and Tobacco Trivia. Includes costume contest with prizes and refreshments.

    The American Lung Association of Maryland is sponsoring a public discussion forum, A CALL TO ACTION. We are reaching a critical point in our efforts to pass Clean Indoor Air legislation in Maryland that will protect all of us from secondhand smoke when we go out to or have to work in eating and drinking establishments. We must show public support for this issue.

    This is your opportunity to voice your concerns about secondhand smoke exposure and the need for 100% smokefree indoor air in all eating and drinking establishments in Maryland. This forum will engage participants in an open and factual discussion about the arguments for and against smokefree environments.

    Youth Advisory Board meeting. The Advisory Board will learn how to create effective PSAs and discuss changes on the Web site and plans for the statewide event.

    SHIP provides intensive training on all components of coordinated school health, including school health services, health education, nutrition, physical education, family and community involvement, staff wellness, school environment (emotional and environmental) and mental health. Teens from Maryland T.R.A.S.H. will be speaking about youth tobacco control and the American Cancer Society will be presenting the Power of Choice curriculum.

    Four youth representatives (Charlie Rutter, Maxine Norcross, Nathaniel Wallace, and Brittany Duke) and advisors from Maryland will participate in this annual training with other states receiving funding from American Legacy Foundation for the Youth Movement Against Tobacco Use grants.

    TRASH coalition, Oxon Hill Smoke Free Teens coalition is hosting a "Cookout" to build awareness within the school community of the coalition's activities, as well as to recognize our member's commitment and contribution to the anti-smoking campaign and increase student participation.

    We are excited to invite Montgomery County middle school students and friends to the upcoming Tobacco Free Sports Challenge. The event is designed as a fun way for teens to get together with friends and be part of an event that promotes tobacco free lifestyles. Event flyers are enclosed, for distributition to the youth and parents at your school/agency.

    The afternoon will be filled with FUN sports challenges with prizes, raffles, and a rap contest with Sterlen Barr, karaoke and prizes with Hot99.5FM, and special guests, including County Council member Phil Andrews and Neelsville Knights Against Tobacco. Sports Stars from the Redskins, Washington Freedom, and the DC Wizards have been invited.

  • May 28, 2003 | Oxon Hill Smoke Free Teens Outreach Activity

    TRASH coalition, Oxon Hill Smoke Teens is sponsoring a day of educational activities—centered around the dangers of tobacco—for children at Oxon Hill Elementary School. Throughout the day we expect to reach between 200 and 250 children with our message.
