Check out what a few of the groups in Maryland are doing right now and meet the statewide officers: Baltimore City TRASH The Baltimore City TRASH coalition meets at the Westside Skills Center. The coalition participates in many educational sessions, and focuses on media advocacy. The coalition has developed various PSAs that they will distribute to their peers and community. Chuck County TRASH Chuck County TRASH is a coalition of area youth from Charles County high schools, faith centers, and community organizations. The CHUCK County TRASH Coalition engages high school students in de-glamorizing tobacco through the creation of anti-tobacco posters, anti-tobacco videos, and the sponsorship of a Kick Butts Day Concert. Frederick County - Teen Coalition on Anti-tobacco FC-T-CAT has brought together a diverse coalition of teens in Frederick County. From community events to festivals to advocacy activities, FC-T-CAT has reached out to community members across the county to educate and increase awareness about the dangers of tobacco use. Student Tobacco Elimination Among Minors (STEAM) The Garrett County chapter of the TRASH coalition is a part of the Maryland 4-H Youth Development Program. The coalition provides leadership training events to prepare local youth to become tobacco control advocates. The rate of smokeless tobacco use is high in Garrett County, and the coalition is working to reduce these rates through innovative awareness activities and events for teens and youth across the county. PG County Student Chamber of Commerce The mission of the Prince George’s Student Chamber of Commerce is to breed a new generation of entrepreneurs and leaders within the county. Through their partnerships, they are devoted to aiding students from high school to college undergraduates to develop the necessary business and leadership skills to accomplish their greatest ambitions. Members of the Chamber’s TRASH coalition collaborate with partners to host tobacco use prevention assemblies and events. |

The Project Exhale TRASH Coalition meets at the Empowering Believers Church of the Apostolic Faith. Through various activities and events, the coalition members educate the community about the long term effects of smoking and encourage youth to resist using tobacco. The coalition is also involved with the church’s “Smoke Free Holy Grounds” initiative, which solicits other churches to eliminate smoking on church grounds.

The TRASH coalition through ROJA hosts tobacco use prevention events and meetings within their community, and also reaches out to parents who smoke providing tobacco cessation resources to them. The coalition focuses on positive messaging for their youth and community. ROJA is a non-profit community service organization that sponsors age-appropriate programs and services for children and families. ROJA has been a tobacco education advocate for almost 20 years providing programs that focus on health issues (tobacco, drugs, alcohol & HIV/AIDS). ROJA also provides youth empowerment programs that give youth the tools they need to become responsible adults and productive citizens.

The Washington County TRASH coalition meets every other week to discuss how its members can prevent their peers from starting to smoke and encourage smokers to quit. They host several events throughout the year to get their community involved and to spread the message about the harmful effects of tobacco.
